Joint thesis supervision

You are a future doctorate student

If you would like:

• to gain experience of living abroad
• to carry out your research in two partner laboratories.
• to benefit from the input of two thesis supervisors, one based at Montpellier 1 University and the other in a foreign university,

you can obtain a double doctorate from Montpellier 1 University and the foreign university based on a single thesis and just one defence of this thesis, by enrolling for joint thesis supervision from the first year of your doctoral research.

Your research work will be divided between each of the two establishments in alternating periods.
You must matriculate at both universities, but you will be exempt from matriculation fees for one of the two establishments (with the obligation to pay fees for at least one of the three years to Montpellier 1 University).

Joint supervision theses are regulated by the decrees of 6

January 2005 and 7

August 2006.

How do I organise a joint supervision thesis at Montpellier 1 University?

Thesis enrolment applications are managed by the doctoral schools.

In parallel to your application, you should contact the International Relations Service, which is in charge of setting up and monitoring joint thesis supervision agreements.

Your joint thesis supervision agreement is finalised with your two thesis supervisors.

You should then send a copy of your exceptional authorisation for enrolment to the International Relations Service if you obtained your degrees abroad, accompanied by a copy of your enrolment, your addresses and telephone numbers in France and abroad and the addresses and telephone numbers of your thesis supervisors.

The joint thesis supervision agreement must be submitted for approval by the International Relations Service.

After it has been approved, 5 copies of the agreement should be signed by the doctoral student, the two thesis supervisors and the presidents of the two universities. The International Relations Service will present the 5 copies of the agreement to the President of Montpellier 1 University.
